3 DPO or CD 16

November 19, 2005

So if you’ve studied the acronym’s since the last post you’ll know that I am now 16 days into my cycle (which starts the first day of a period with CD1) and am 3 days post ovulation (the day an egg is released from an ovary and can be fertilized).

Today I’m feeling hopeful that we’re on track this month. I have to admit that I have gone into November feeling more positive than I have felt in a long time. For some reason, I just think it will work out this month. I was ecstatic to have a clear indicator of ovulation – on CD 14, and to know that we were timing things right for fertilization.

Now I sort of feel that its out of my hands, as we wait for implantation. Typically, implantation happens anywhere from 6 to 12 days post ovulation, so 3 to 9 days from now. Implantation can also be accompanied by spotting, which is the effect of the egg burrowing into the uterine lining. I guess I had spotting in my last pregnancy, when I miscarried in August, but I have also read that every single pregnancy is different in its symptoms.

I’m curious to know more about symptoms, and whether you should actually feel anything in the time between ovulation and implantation. Essentially, there is just a fertilized egg rapidly dividing, which is floating freely in my body (assuming we got everything right this month). Becuase it isn’t attached to my uterus, I am not exchanging blood with it and so I shouldn’t technically be feeling any effects of it – fertilized or not. Thats my understanding at least.

But one of the women on the bulletin board I spend a lot of time on – babycenter – says that a fertilized egg releases progesterone which is absorbed by my fallopian tubes, so I could be feeling pregnancy symptoms. Click here for a list of the typical 10 pregnancy symptoms so you know what I’m referring to in future!

Today I am feeling somewhat crampy, like its uncomfortable to sit up or lean forward today. I also went through about half an hour of strange feelings in my uterus, almost like contractions. It was a fluttering feeling that would happen about every 30 seconds and flutter 3 or 4 times before resting silent again. I’ve never really felt that before – could it be a good sign! See there I go, convincing myself of symptoms…

I sometimes (…always?) feel like I am making up symptoms, trying to convince myself that more is happening than really is. This website – twoweekwait.com has been a great resource, as women who find out they are pregnant post all their experiences there, from 1DPO onwards. There are some interesting trends, like many women find around 6/7DPO that they feel like they’re getting sick or have a sore throat/stuffy nose. This is certainly not written up in most books! I’ve got one great book – the’>http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764565168/102-4563953-0832958?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance”>the Mother of All Pregnancy Books which has been really helpful. I’m also ordering the Conception’>http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0757302386/102-4563953-0832958?v=glance&n=283155&%5Fencoding=UTF8&colid=1BB8XZEYS51RW&coliid=I3IOT8DXM6EOKM&v=glance”>Conception Chronicles which is apparently hilarious and a great resource.

Off to bed – more tomorrow.
